Welcome to my website.
Hello, I’m James Deckinger and I’m an art director. What you’ll see on this website are highlights from my career.
Since we haven’t met, I’d like to share some details about my career and personality in the hopes of finding a new full time home, where I’ll have opportunities to best use my skills and experience.
I went to art school at Syracuse University and focused on advertising design. It’s incredible to me how much more than design the job has evolved into. Fortunately, like many creatives I know, I’ve evolved, too.
In 2004, I joined Ogilvy as a Senior Art Director. While there, I ideated, designed and produced global campaigns for Duracell, IBM, and American Express. The time I spent there shaped the way I think about brands, what questions I ask, and what qualities to look for when choosing a partner to work with.
In my first Creative Director, role I partnered with former Grey Advertising executive, John Fletcher, in 2008 to work on digital campaigns for Dow Jones, Condé Nast, and Forbes. Our specialty quickly became transforming dated digital communications into responsive, user friendly solutions.
Most of these brands are among the largest in the world, but I’ve also led the way for small businesses like fast casual restaurant ‘Pita Chip’ which underwent a complete rebrand in 2022. With newer, growing businesses like this one, I work as the lead creative director and art director. While it’s less of a traditional agency environment and more of a member of the client’s team environment, it’s led to work that I’m proud of and that you’ll see represented in my portfolio.
I live in Mamaroneck, NY with my wife Anna, and our sons Max & Micah. Although I’m used to working virtually, I still miss the camaraderie of the in-person experience.
Please reach out if you’d like to talk about your brand.
